Today we are going to delve into one of the most popular recipes – ham and cheese sliders. So let’s get started, folks!

What Are Sliders?

Sliders are extremely small irresistible hamburgers! In fact, the term ‘slider’ comes from Navy slang, perhaps as early as the 1940s, later adapted by burger chain White Castle to refer to their small burgers. And voila… sliders were everywhere. The original term may have come from the way patties on the grill at sea would slide around every time the ship moved, or it may have referred to a large amount of grease the navy used when cooking them…

Sliders are regulars on the menu of practically every second household and a classic like ham and cheese sliders are more popular as they are replete with – sweet slices of ham, irresistibly gooey Swiss cheese, squishy Hawaiian rolls, and a savoury butter drizzled over top.

So not only do they feature on the dinner menu but they’re perfect for lunch boxes, game-day spreads, picnics, and parties.

Ingredients

  • Deli ham (about 10 ounces) – 12 thin slices
  • Dijon mustard – 1 tablespoon
  • Hawaiian sweet rolls such as King’s – 1 (12-ounce) package
  • Kosher salt – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Onion powder – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Poppy seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Swiss cheese (about 7 ounces) – 12 slices
  • Unsalted butter – 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick)
  • Worcestershire sauce – 1 teaspoon

Method

  1. Arrange a rack in the middle of the oven and heat the oven to 350°F
  2. Place four tablespoons of unsalted butter in a small, microwave-safe bowl and microwave until melted for about 20 to 30 seconds (you could alternatively, melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat). Add one tablespoon Dijon mustard, one teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, half teaspoon onion powder, and one-fourth teaspoon kosher salt, and whisk to combine
  3. Without separating the rolls, and with the help of a serrated knife, cut one package of Hawaiian sweet dinner rolls in half horizontally. Place the bottom half of the rolls in a 9×13-inch or 7×11-inch baking dish
  4. Arrange six slices of the Swiss cheese on the rolls, overlapping the slices as needed to completely cover. Fold and arrange 12 thin slices of ham over the cheese, arranging a slice on each roll. Layer the remaining six slices of Swiss cheese over the ham. Place the top half of the rolls over the cheese
  5. Brush the butter onto the top of the rolls, then sprinkle with one teaspoon poppy seeds. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminium foil
  6. Bake until the sandwich is heated through and the cheese melts (for about 20 minutes). Uncover and bake until the rolls are lightly browned for about seven to eight minutes. Transfer the slab to a cutting board and then cut into individual sliders with a serrated knife before serving
