Introduction

Generally it is seen that most of cheeses that are produced in Wales, no matter how different ingredients are used for the production of each of them; these are mostly named after Caerphilly. The reason is that it is the most common and well known producer of cheese.

However, there is a reason why Welsh cheese is famous all around the world. Even from so many flavors and types of cheese which are available in Wales, there are just a few which has made the cut and one of it has won as well for being the best cheese in our list that we are going to share in this article.

There are four cheese which caught out heart for the aroma, texture and flavor that they carry. These four are; Taffy apple, Pwll Mawr, Hafod and Golden Cenarth. We particularly tried each of these cheeses and finally came to the conclusion as to which one is the winner. Let us take you on the ride about the exclusivity of these delicious Welsh cheeses.

Golden Cenarth

The outer texture of this cheese feels like soft undulating cushion which we use for inserting pins for safe keeping. The color of the rind falls between snowdrop and dusky hues. It is what comes from the inside of this cheese that caught our attention. The cheese from inside is silky and has a runny texture. Even though it is messy to eat yet it is one of the marvelous cheeses that we ever tasted. The aroma is somewhat pungent.

Pwll Mawr

This particular cheese is very appealing to the eye as it is covered in black wax. The aroma is not much different than that of mature cheddar. Texture wise it is very moist on the tongue but somewhat grainy as well. It is easily useable on steaks when it is on last grilling round. This Welsh cheese is a little heavy on the stomach. Even though it cannot be used as a full meal but it can be used as a sizeable hors-d’oeuvre.

Hafod

This cheese is produced by Holden Farm Dairy. They only produce this one particular cheese and are known as longest certified organic dairy farm of Wales. The cheese is produced using techniques which require handy work. The milk that is used for the cheese comes from 80 strong herd of Ayrshire cows. It means that every cheese is different in taste because it depends on what the cows have been grazing on. The shape of the cheese is a wedge. The rind color is somewhat similar to that red-orange-brown hue. The aroma is nutty. The flavor is both nutty and somewhat grassy.

Taffy Apple

This last cheese on our list is an award winning cheese. It is packed with a lot of flavor. The outer look is yellow which comes from wax but when you dive into it, you get the flavor of sweet toffee apple but also that of a very caramelized onion kind of. It combines both the flavors i.e. Hurns Brewery Taffy Apples cider and onion marmalade. The texture is creamy and coasts the entire mouth.

Bottom Line

The final winner out of these four cheeses is Taffy Apple for us. The battle was indeed very tough and it was a hard decision for us but this final cheese took the title just by a small margin. Cheese is known to be the most flavorful food out there because there are so many variety of cheese that is available. So whenever you get the chance, try out these four cheeses.
